Arthur Wooden was a man with a giant heart, a hearty laugh and a desire to see children active in sports. He and his wife Gladys were never far from a field or court as their two children made their way through Redding youth sports and eventually college level play.
His voice was heard over many a foul ball at Tiger field and later Shasta High School. He was a friend and coach to hundreds of Shasta County children and really a kid at heart himself. It wasn't unheard of for Art and Gladys to identify a child in need and then outfit them as necessary for their desired sport.
As a Shasta County Sheriff's officer he also donated presents anonymously to children on his beat during Christmas so that they knew they weren't forgotten. Art and Gladys were people of action and believed all children should have opportunities just as their own children were privileged to have.
Sadly, in 2013 Art succumbed to a heart attack while staying at their family cabin. In his honor, the Art Wooden Play Ball! Foundation was created in 2014 to carry on his mission of helping Shasta County children become active in sports.
